1. What is WordPress?

WordPress is the world's famous free and open source content management also know as CMS platform. The exclusivity in the WordPress from other content management platforms, WordPress do have an architecture where it's easy to plugin a plugin which could have different features and template system.

Due to the freedom that gained by the developers to make customization to a single platform which could enable multiple features is what made WordPress special. WordPress is used in blogs, eCommerce websites, online stores, Websites.

WordPress is used in 60 million websites including 30.6% top 10 million websites as of April 2018. 

2. History

WordPress is a project which got successor by a project name b2evolution. Prior version of WordPress before it's known as the WordPress, it was commonly known as the b2 or cafelog which was written in PHP with the use of MySQL by Michel Valdrighi.

A product which named as WordPress appeared in 2003 as a joint venture between Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little to create an arm of b2 written by Michel earlier. The name "WordPress" was suggested by Christine Selleck Tremoulet who was a friend of Matt Mullenweg.

Initial release of WordPress is was in 27th May 2003 and the WordPress is licensed under the GNU GPLv2+.
