What is Bluetooth 4.0 + LE? - Explained

Bluetooth version 4.0 is the immediate release of Bluetooth after version 3.0. Version 4.0 is a fully change to the core of Bluetooth technology. Bluetooth version 4.0 is released on 30th June 2010 by the SIG.


Bluetooth version 4.0 includes the typical technologies which were there in from the bluetooth version 1.0 which includes the Bluetooth high speed and classic bluetooth. In addition to the existing technologies, Bluetooth version 4.0 embedded with Low Energy also known LE protocols. 

Earlier the bluetooth version was known as Wibree. Though the bluetooth version 4.0 does have some characteristics of Wibree, Bluetooth version 4.0 is entirely new protocol designed build up rapid simple links. 

As an alternatively to the Bluetooth versions from 1.0 to Bluetooth version 3.0, Bluetooth version 4.0 was introduced to operate at the lowest possible energy consumption via the newest protocol and to work with a coin cell battery's efficiency.

Bluetooth version 4.0 chips were designed to allow the types of implementation which is dual mode and single mode and enhanced previous versions of bluetooth. 

Till version 3.0, bluetooth 3.0 supported backward compatibility which means the compatibility of working with previous versions of bluetooth devices. The bluetooth version 4.0 supports only the devices which are version 3.0 and above.

The single mode bluetooth chips enabled the bluetooth to work with low energy and low cost projects and applications.
